Interpretive Power

DE: Deutungsmacht

The influence over which explanation becomes the basis for shared organisational decisions.

Interpretive power concerns whose explanation is heard, adopted and used as the basis for shared decisions. Formal hierarchy matters, but so do trust, reputation and informal relationships. A team's account of routinely overridden decisions may challenge a leader's diagnosis of insufficient responsibility. Whether this account is investigated or dismissed determines which information can change the prevailing interpretation.
